Pocono Coral Farm is a self sustaining coral aquaculture facility nestled high up in Pennsylvania's Pocono mountains. We specialize in captive raised coral, fish, algaes and invertebrates. Our goal is to provide high quality 100% captive raised specimens to the marine ornamental trade. Our farm was established in 2004 as a small basement operation and in 2008 we broke ground on our new, state of the art facility. We currently run over 5000 gallons of aquaculture systems with another 3000 on the way.
Our 1500 sqaure ft. indoor facility is where we house the bulk of our corals. The original building was nothing more than an empty shell. Everything was designed and built by our team. To get the most out of our limited space we custom built the majority of the tanks. They are made out of wood and sealed with a high quality epoxt resin.
The greenhouse started off as a carport attatched to the side of the main building. The orientation to the sun was perfect and being attatched to the main builing gives us easy access and added insulation from the cold weather. This 1000 sqare ft. building is still under construction, but should be operational by spring 2009. The greenhouse will help expand our current facility and allow us to grow both under artificial lighting and natural sunlight.
We all have to start somewhere. We began culturing corals in the basement of a retail clothing store. It was dark and dingy, but it was a start. The original system was a meager 400 gallons but after a few years and a couple of upgrades we increased it up to over 3000 gallons. It was a real blessing for us to have been able to experiment with many different types of tanks, lighitng flow, etc. before we built the new facility. Our new design was greatly based on lesson learned over the first few years at the old facility.
