Where it all started

Back in 2004 we decided it was time to take our hobbiest obsession to the next level. The project began with a simple setup. We had 8, 50 gal  and 2, 300 gal rubbermaid stock tanks.

It wasnt long before we ran out of room in our tanks.  So in October of 2006 we decided on building a new system out of lumber and pond liner. In a matter of days we went from concept to a monstrous, 24 foot long by 6 foot wide by 1 foot deep tank. It turned out to be very efficient using only 1 return pump, 2 small pumps powering 12 surge buckets and only 6, 250 watt metal halides for lighting. Very cost effective and practical for coral propagation.

Stage 3: Surge Mania

After having so much success with surge buckets on our previous upgrade we decided to take it to the next level on our next project. The new system consisted of 5, 4 foot long by 4 foot wide by 2 foot deep tanks. All were plumbed together and the last tank was used as a sump. From there the water was pumped through a manifold to 16 individual surge buckets. Each one fired at a random rate and created an incredibly turbulent and variable water flow pattern in each tank. The 4 foot drop from the surge to the tank allowed us to increase our flow dramatically using the free power of gravity. The whole system was run on a single sequence dart pump.

It really hurt to have to leave this place after all we had done there, but we are off to bigger and better things and havn't looked back.
